Guides
Handwriting
Manuscript and cursive handwriting instruction is important for all students, but it is crucial for those with dyslexia and/or dysgraphia. Learning the correct letter formation will make writing easier for students. A strong foundation is required for students to master higher-level writing skills, such as composition and expository writing.
Special Education Terms
You will encounter new terminology as you navigate getting special education services for your child in public school. This is a list of the most common acronyms and terms you are likely to see. For more information, visit Understood.org.
Texas Dyslexia Handbook
The Texas Dyslexia Handbook is intended to “provide procedures for school districts, charter schools, campuses, teachers, students, and parents/guardians in early identification of, instruction for, and accommodations for students with dyslexia” (p. viii). If you have a child with dyslexia who attends public school, you will benefit from understanding the contents of this handbook. The TEA added a useful FAQ in August of 2024.
Start Here
You’ve likely found your way here because your child has been diagnosed with dyslexia (or you suspect it). The good news is that dyslexic students can absolutely become proficient readers, and you do not need a diagnosis to start helping your child! When it comes to a new diagnosis, there is a ton of information to take in. This process can be overwhelming, and the learning curve is steep.
When my son was first diagnosed with dyslexia, the people who helped us the most were moms who had walked the road before us: teachers who had children with dyslexia; moms with lots of experience advocating in the schools and state legislature; and moms who were willing to share stories and advice. These guides are my version of paying it forward. I hope you find them helpful as you navigate this diagnosis and advocate for your child.
